Plot

The relationship between Church and Art has always been very close and many Popes expressed their thoughts on Art and its function. However, never happened before that a Pope decided to dedicate a book to Art.

Draka Distribution presents the documentary based on the book by Pope Francis “My idea of art” (edited by Tiziana Lupi – pub. by Mondadori), the first book written by a pontiff about his concept of art.

The documentary intends aims to achieve precisely what Pope Francis imagines in his book: “the Vatican Museums have to be the most beautiful place and the most hospitable. It must throw open its doors to the world”.

In his book Pope Bergoglio clearly expresses his point of view on what Art is and on what it should be: credible witness of the Creation Beauty, tool of evangelization and instrument to counter the culture of the scrap. Pope Francis thus suggests a series of artworks to describe his idea. The documentary “My idea of art” is therefore kind of a very unusual art guide, following the path indicated by Pope Francis, walking into his ideal art gallery, developed alongside the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter Square and the Vatican Basilica.

On this route we will see the Sistine Chapel, The Works of Mercy, The Deposition by Caravaggio, but also “Christ the Worker” and The Virgen de Luján by Alejandro Marmo as well as the Renault 4 donated to the Pontiff from Don Renzo Zocca.

With the participation of Tiziana Lupi (author of documentary plot and screenplay as well as editor of the book “Pope Francis – My idea of Art” (IT ed. Mondadori) which the documentary is based on; Tiziana Lupi has already edited another book about the Pope: “Il nostro papa. La prima biografia illustrata di Francesco” (pub.by Mondadori), the first illustrated biography of Pope Francis); with the consultancy of Sandro Barbagallo (curator of the Department of Historical Collections at Vatican Museums.

Music composed by the great pianist Giuseppina Torre.
